Shantale Person was born in Fayetteville, NC on May 28, 1987. As a young child her family eventually settled in Chesterfield, VA and as the years went by her family and peers did not know that she would grow up to be the lyricist she is today. Being brought up by a very poetic mother she learned to express her emotions through poetry and song. As Shantale began looking for a name to define herself the name Ms Proper came to her during a car ride one afternoon. Ms Proper felt the name fit her not only lyrically but personally. She is at the forefront of the city’s renaissance of talented Hip Hop artists. Since her first release “Addicted To The Game” in 2007, she refined her craft and gained notice from both industry and fans; yet it was her 2nd mixtape release “The Wake Up”; her sophomore project released in 2009, which put Ms Proper on the map. In 2010, Ms Proper released her 3rd mixtape, “Proper Etiquette”, which received even more attention from fans and industry insiders. Her music has been featured on three different Digital Dynasty mixtapes within the year and she was recently nominated for the Indie Elite Achievement Award. She has opened for Jae Millz, Big K.R.I.T, Cyhi Da Prince, Rah The MC, Force MD’s, Olivia, Mims, and Pretty Ricky. After two auditions on March 12, 2011 Ms Proper was chosen by executive producer and writer of B.E.T’s 106 & Park, Pat Charles, to perform on the show which would later air on July 13, 2011. Ms Proper’s 4thmixtape” #NoDaysOff” featuring DJ White Owl was released July 2, 2011 and is destined to show people more of what this artist and CEO of her own label, So Proper Entertainment, has in store. It wasn’t until years later that I would learn that those trips were much more than family visits and that my father was involved in some heavy drug trafficking. My father was eventually arrested when I was around 5 years old and was sentenced to 35 years in prison. I didn’t take it well and I did the obvious. I acted out in school and blamed the incarceration of my father for my actions. My mother had met a man named Ralph Reynolds and I didn’t like him because I felt as if he was supposed to be the man to replace my father.
I’ve seen a lot, done a lot, been through a lot but at the end of the day I’ve learned a lot. One of the most important things in life I’ve learned is that you’ll never progress if you don’t do what you want to do. When it comes to music or anything in life I do what I want to. I write autobiographies and make music about the events that I want to write about. I stand for the number 4…Mike Mo, Craig O, Cuddy Dub, and John Doe create the “4Broz” and that is who I live for and that is the movement. To this game I will bring back substance and creativity. I want to make it hard for just anyone to get a deal and make people prove that they deserve to be revered as today’s entertainers are. My father was always trying to get me to play an instrument, I wasn't interested in instruments I was more interested in the sound of music vocally. One day my dad surprised me with my first key board, I started messing with it, listening to cd's and playing the songs by ear while listening. At that moment I knew I was meant to do music but artistry wise I wasn't so pressed about it!"-J.Latay. Writing her first song in 2002 walking home from school she says "I was listening to the cars flying down the street, the trees brushing there leaves in the wind, my feet on the pavement, the birds chirping, the beat just came to me the words started flowing from my mouth I knew that day from then on I was meant to sing and to write!
